Automation
Automation is a common feature in production. The traditional symbol of automation is the mechanized flow line.Its origins can be tracked back to the work of Henry Ford in the manufacture of automobiles in the early twentieth century. History of automation began at the same time as the history of industrial engineering, at the time of Industrial Revolution, but the development has been rapid during the last decades.
Automation is the technology concerned with application of complex mechanical, electronic, and computer based systems in the operation and control of production. At Kajaani Oy our focus was on the automation of Pulp and Paper processes. Multipoint online measuring was an essential part of the success of the Kajaani, transformed to Metso Automation in the middle of 1980's.
The aim of automation is flexibility. An early automation was not so flexible but as automation developed it became more flexible and productive. Present request for automation is that production ahs to be ass efficient as an assembly line and as flexible as an old time handicraftsman.
Information Management
Information management and information policies were developed in the 70-80s. They can be considered as forefathers of knowledge managment. They are more closely tied to information technology and information science. The focus lies within the managing the information. Information can be thought made up from data, documents and templates. We created the company Corporate Information Systems in Kajaani. The next one was Oy HelgeKeitel Ab and Sensodec Oy.
History
Information and knowledge have been managed in some form for thousands of years but it has become science only during the last few decades. Companies have applicated knowledge management with conscious effort to their management strategies for decades but in different countries or rather in different continents the approach has varied.
Continents
In America companies have relied long on database management. In Europe companies have been using different methods of calculating their intangible assets and measuring them. In Japan the whole approach on knowledge management and management as a whole is different. They concentrate on human and their form of knowledge management is to give employees surroundigs in which the innovate effectively.
