Mittelstand
Germany's 300,000 small and medium size companies, collectively know as the Mittelstand, are considered the backbone of the country's economy.
These businesses, each with fewer than 500 employees, produce two-thirds of Germany's gross national product and employ 4 out of every 5 German workers.
They collectively generate 30 % of German exports, and often have market shares of 70-90 %.
More than three-quarters of Mittelstand companies are family owned or closely held, and nearly two-thirds are managed by their owners.
