New York
So I look forward to seeing details on what's going on in Manhattan. Mapped Up is awesome!
New York, USA
July5, 2006: Yesterday evening, just after the twilight's last gleaming, a magnificent fireworks display began bursting in air over New York City's East River. Read the New Yorker and Hope.
| Entrepreneurs who were doing business in the eighties might still remember IBM for its suits and corporate ways. Now Drew Clark, the co-founder of the IBM Venture Capital Group, has shed his tie and is changing that image. His group is opening up IBM’s vast resources to startups. Unlike some of its competitors, IBM has embraced open source software which makes it easer and cheaper to deploy technology. While IBM offers all types of help to entrepreneurs, Drew stresses the IB more than the M: being international and helping with business development over just assisting with the machines. | |

Business Week
Rocketboom
Rocketboom is a three minute daily videoblog based in New York City. We cover and create a wide range of information and commentary from top news stories to quirky internet culture. Agenda includes releasing each new clip at 9am EST, Monday through Friday. With a heavy emphasis on international arts, technology and weblog drama, Rocketboom is presented via online video and widely distributed through RSS.
Popular
Rocketboom is currently one of the most popular videoblogs on the internet with more daily subscribers for original syndicated multimedia content than nearly any other site, including podcasts. Rocketboom does differ from a regular TV program in many important ways. Instead of costing millions of dollars to produce, Rocketboom is created with a consumer-level video camera, a laptop, two lights and a map with no additional overhead or costs.

Also, Rocketboom is distributed online, all around the world and on demand, and thus has a much larger potential audience than any TV broadcast. However, they spend $0 on promotion, relying entirely on word-of-mouth, and close to $0 on distribution because bandwidth costs and space are so inexpensive. While TV programs have traditionally been uni-directional, Rocketboom engages its international audience in a wide range of topical discussions.
Amanda
Amanda Congdon quitting Rocketboom? How could she? The quirkily funny, attractive 25-year-old had become practically a fantasy figure for thousands of fans. She has been replaced by Joanne Colan.
Joanne
This if from her blog: "First off, let me say thank you to Rocketboom for handing me the baton and giving me a stretch on the track. I'm thrilled."
She continues "I shall do my best to do all of you proud. And right up there with the thank you to Rocketboom is my thanks to all of you who have visited my new site (it's still coming together!) and shared your thoughts. It's great to hear from you. Sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you but the past few days have been a whirlwind of activity. We haven't stopped! Oh, and that's not the royal "we" because I'm British (and no, I don't refer to myself in the third person either), that's me and the fab Rocketboom team."
"I am anxious to get the first next new transitional epsiode up there... and over with! So we can all get into the flow of things and continue onwards. I do hope you'll come with us. If the last few days are anything to go by, it's going to be a lot of fun!" Joanna Colan completes.
Hotel
The Roosevelt Hotel is one of the great old hotels in New York. It opened its doors in 1924. It's in a prime location, on Madison Avenue and 45th Street in Midtown. A vintage bronze relief of Teddy Roosevelt stands watch over the main lobby, as he has for over 80 years.
The hotel also illustrates the seen and unseen in the architecture of our physical economy. What we see is a grand old hotel. What we don't see is behind the walls and underground - all the pipes, pumps, valves and more. These things get old. And they need replacements and repairs. Now imagine that entire unseen infrastructure on a national scale.
Getting there
Getting to New York requires planning. I called our partners a few days later and explained the problem with timing. We don't have a schedule yet, but working on it.
When our partner called us and we had a talk about how meeting in New York would be good for future business.
Next step
I sat at my desk one evening and wrote a long list of the many things we have to consider, prepare and agree about. We are going to spend the next several weeks working with the business plan for 2007 - 2010.
- The airport: We can take a direct flight from Helsinki airport to New york and catch a connecting flight to Atlanta. The a trans-Atlantic cruise will take 6-10 hours depending on the route we take.
- The early morning lines at the train stations, however, are
nothing compared to any line at the airport. Even the line
to purchase a much needed coffee will set you back at least
a quarter of an hour.
- We hustled into the baggage area. "This is the New York art of waiting for your luggage," AB announced sarcastically. "No matter what you do or where you go in New York, expect a waiting line."
- LaGuardia Airport: We walk out of the airplane and across the short length of tarmac, and past the arrival gates to meet 15 to 30 minutes after arrival. We agreed about how to find our partners in the crowd.

In his other life, David is an Emmy-winning correspondent for CBS News, a frequent contributor to NPR's "Morning Edition," creator of the Missing Manual series of computer books, and father of three.
Next Day
We walked quickly along the crowded street toward a restaurant on 35th Street. I could like New York, I thought; I didn't seem so uneasy about myself in New York anymore.
I'll get used to this place, just like Paris, London, Berlin, Milano, Bologna, Pisa, Firenze, Livorno, Brighton, Stockhol, Sao Paulo, Berlin, Hamburg, Lyon, Bruxelles, Atlanta, Montreal, San Fransisco, Chicago, Vancouver, etc.
- The big problem in the beginning was finances
- New York is expensive!
Road Trip
- Road trips or skylanes bind us together as a nations
- Also in businees, first experiences take a very firm hold on the imagination
- New York is a great place
- Now this is much more about networking
The car broke down half way between Albany and New York...I was thinking: Not here, not here in the middle of nowhere. That's a wierd statement when considering the distances and roads back in Finland.
Small Companies
Collaborative work spaces
Smaller businesses have now taken the lead in spending on information technology. They are using collaborative work spaces online where people can share and edit Web-based documents and databases for project management, help desks, recruiting, selling, product development and other tasks. I opened the office door and stepped inside.
