Since I'm going to the US soon, I was thinking of buying a mic, preferably one that I could use to record just audio straight into my computer as well as plug into my camcorder. Suggestions welcome. Budget well under $100...

Podcamp Boston, June 27, 2006. Podcamp Boston will be held on September 9th and 10th, 2006, in a venue to-be-named in Boston, accessible by public transportation, and readily reachable via the train.

Podcamp

Podcamp Boston is a free unconference in the tradition of BarCamp. People register at the website (the secret group password is: nepod), and everyone can participate in some form or another.

The majority of people who download audio or video podcasts use Safari, hinting that Apple users may download the most podcasts. Firefox came in second overall. Internet Explorer came in a distant third among audio podcast downloaders, and AOL was third among video podcast downloaders.

Unconference

In an unconference, attendees are the experts and the organizers. Sessions get organized on the fly the morning of the event, and there are all kinds of ways to participate: hold a 30 minute session or demo, a 5 minute lightning talk, or participate in a panel discussion. Join an informal round table talk, participate in podcasting demos and actual live podcasts as well! Free refreshments, including meals, will be served throughout the day.

A BarCamp is the equivalent of an intellectual swap meet. Everybody brings something to the table, whether it's the web server trouble they diagnosed and defeated last week... or the ability to juggle five pins while holding an instructional conversation.

Podcamp is free to attend. Accomodations are being worked out to provide a "camping" option. If people would like hotel accommodations, unconference organizers will work out a deal with a hotel. While the camp is an unconference, several topics are already planned:

Dialogue

Just a thought - if you're primary purpose is capturing dialog, then that's typically captured in mono - onfiltered= onfiltered= onfiltered=mono. Now, if you use a stereo mic or two external mics hooked to the camera, you'd want to have stereo capture. Still, not necessary for the human voice.

Mono

Even big-time feature films have the dialog track in mono.Where a stereo mic comes in handy is for effects - that racecar driving by for example. I left one vid in stereo (using the in-camera stereo mic) was of a big bee flying around. Gave the listener a sense of space.Unless you've got music that benefits a lot from stereo play, or it's about racecars driving by, most vlogs are audibly complete in mono.
