Biotouch

Macarena Pallares the Biotouch business blog builder and Web 2.0 strategy creator.

The project

Macarena Pallares has been working with the Biotouch business blog since May 26, 2008 and the work continues for five weeks.

  • Biotouch
  • Yahoo Answers
  • Google Calendar
  • Finnoflag home page
  • Basecamp discussion (project intranet)
  • Google Apps (Word, PPT, PDF)
  • Google Analytics
  • wiki

The University

  • Description of the work (assignment)
  • Goals set by the university (link to letter from professor)
  • Time span (we could use Google Calendar: add a script to blog and this wiki)

Roles of Macarena Pallares

Different roles in this project

Add some text here...

  1. Building the information channel
  2. Search for Biotouch themes (Internet, forums, interviews)
  3. Role as 'change manager'
  4. Role as 'blogger and communicator'
  5. Role as 'marketing manager'

Biotouch from plan to reality

This is a new communication channel that will cover trends and opportunities in the field of biotechnology and microbiology.

  • The idea for this project was intiated by the blog Wise New Business Ideas (Macarena Pallares one of the bloggers)
  • Biotouch blogging started May 25, 2008
  • Basic tools were installed last week in May
  • Blog posting started at the same time
  • Information will be personalized

Presenting biotouch members

Elias Hakalehto, Juha Veikko Mentu and Helge Keitel are co-writers. The objective is to create an interactive environment where decision makers, students, innovators, investors and the general public can discuss Biotouch technology and business models.

  • General guidelines for the new blog
  • Expanding to Wiki
  • Use of other social networking applications
  • Facebook etc.

Yahoo Answers

It might be a good idea to add "Answers to the toolbox" within a week or two when we get more questions about the topics we're covering.

The Biotouch Channel

The BIOTOUCH communication channel is moderated by Macarena Pallares. Below are some of the areas this blog is going to cover.

  1. Paper and board
  2. Biorefineries
  3. Mining
  4. Water
  5. Food
  6. Health Care

The Focus Groups

BIOTOUCH is intended for executives, decision makers and the general public. The style of the communication channel will be:

  1. A personal diary style
  2. Interviews and discussions
  3. Personalized style
  4. Global point of view
  5. Generic presentation

Dialog With Global Audience

The idea is to take out the complexity from biotech and microbiology.

  • Domestic Fuel is an interesting source of information.

Financing

  • Biotouch services financing
  • Angel investment
  • Sponsoring

Long Term

  1. How to find new customers
  2. Global reach

Biotouch Services

  • Biointelligence
  • Biodoc
  • Bioitouch
  • Biocontrol
  • Biodisplay

Evaluation

Biotouch has about 40 visitors per day after one month from start. That's a great result. The geographical distribution is quite interesting. Adding Yahoon Answers to the project was a very good idea.

Business Communication Challenge

Abstract

A paper mill consists of pipe lines, tanks, screens, filters etc. which all act as growth environments (niches) for microbes. Paper machine itself is like a continuous flow fermentor, securing constant nutrient supply, growth environment and feedback for microbes and can be compared to biological waste water treatment plant.

All regions of the system have their own microbological populations and different kind of risks for the process, machinery, employers, products and environment. Portable Microbiological Enrichment Unit (PMEU) by FINNOFLAG Oy (Siilinjärvi, Finland) was tested as an rapid method to estimate microbial activity in process waters of paper machines.

It was also adopted to evaluate the effects of biocides against the microbial population of the machines. Experiments to detect harmful bacteria from samples were also performed. The results showed that PMEU can follow the microbial activity of the process waters without any growth-favoring additives and gives therefore a view into the real in vivo microbiological events in the paper machine.

It also help to avoid bias, caused the selective and recovering effects of traditional colony count methods, when choosing a proper biocide for the process. Because the robustness of PMEU incubator, it does need any specified microbiological laboratory and can be adopted to common QC and R&D laboratories of paper mills.

The communication challenge

There is a need to spread the word about Finnoflag Oy innovations (PMEU) and services (Bitouch). PMEU is a product with a global potential.

The networking Biotouch team is looking for partners and investors to strengthen the organization for a global penetration.

The Biotouch blog was created as a tool for open communication with potential clients, partners and innovators. Macarena Pallares role has been to start the business blog and to reach out to a broader audience on a global scale.

Paper Machine as an example

Paper machines can be regarded as ecosystems, whose growth conditions are very regulated because the most strict adjustments of the paper production processes (MENTU 2007).

Another point of view into the microbiology of paper machines is biotechnical one: wet ends of the machines act like chemostatic bioreactors, supporting the microbial growth by securing adequate growth conditions. Constant temperatures, pH values and nutrients favor the growth of many microbial species.

An everlasting feedback of microbes also takes place because the water circulations, similarly like in activated sludge plants. Most important aspect, both ecologically and biotechnically, is the stability of the process which enables the evolution of well-adapted microbial population inside the paper machines
